how can i provide user to search documents in customised way i mean,for ex i want to provide user to search the documents based on departmenthow to do this

i m talking abt notes client
my requirement is i have one column which is categorised
in that column under each category i have details of department books
ex: under abc i have 50 documents
under xyz ihave 100 documents okie.
if user enters department name corresponding documents should appear
2.again if user searches for particular book name in those documents
documents related to that only should appear
if any one having code pls frwd as early as possible
