CSS challenge (z-index) in web view

I have a web view with several columns. Using @Left, each column shows a truncated portion of a given field. I found a cool CSS solution that allows me to show the entire contents of the field in a tool-tip-like popup (Community Trademarks - Furm) when the user mouses over the text.

The problem I have is that the popups overlap text in the following view row(s), and both sets of text are jumbled together. To avoid this, a CSS z-index number needs to be assigned to each popup. The formula @DocNumber would work except that it’s in reverse (low to high). So, using passthru HTML, I added a negative/minus sign to the beginning of the @DocNumber. Unfortunately, this causes it to display behind the body (invisible) in Netscape, even if I assign the body a z-index of 0, -1000, etc.

I’d like to get this working in IE 6 and Netscape 7. While not exactly a Notes/Domino problem, does anyone have a suggested workaround? I’d be happy to consider other popup solutions. Haven’t looked into JavaScript yet…

Thanks in advance!

If the text appears jumbled together, set a background color on mouseover, instead of the default transparent - that will maks the text below it, improving readability.

Good suggestion, but I already have a background color set. Because it’s a block element and it overlaps with others of the same, the text is jumbled together. This is why the z-index is required, as I understand it. Unfortunately, I can’t come up with a way to make the z-index of row 1 both a positive number and greater than the z-index of row 2. Thanks for the response, though.
