Compact with the -R switch converts ODS back a version, so if you are on a 6 server this will convert back to 5. Templates are often ODS 20 so shouldn’t require converting.
However, you can’t use this to convert any design elements, formulas , script etc back a version.

in order to keep the reverted db at R5 ODS be sure to rename it to .NS5. If you don’t rename it and compact (without the -R) runs against it on an ND6 server it will upgrade the ODS again.

Make a copy as an .NS5. Copy the template as a .NS5 and then rename the template to a .ntf via the OS
