We have a user whose local mail file runs consistancy check very often. This occurs both when opening the mail file or if he is in the mail file and tries to open a new message. It doesn’t occur every time, but very often he will be unable to access his mail file, which states that the database has been taken offline. The status bar at the bottom shows that the mail file is having a consistancy check run against it.
We have complete uninstalled and re-installed the Notes client, Created a “new copy” of the mail file on the server and brought down a new local replica, but neither action has helped. It is only happening to this individual and I have a local replica of his mail file, but have not been able to reproduce the condition.
We are now setting up another physical machine, which will have Notes installed and this users ID and mail file used to see if it occurs on a different machine, or not.
In the meantime, I was wondering if anyone else has run into this and, if so, was the root cause identified and a solution found?
Thank you for any assistance offered.
Subject: Consistancy check running on local mail file very often
According to our internal helpdesk database, the last time this happened to one of my users, I ran nfixup -f, ncompact -c -i, and nupdate against the local mailfile replica and it resolved the issue. It’s odd that I would have done that instead of just pulling down a new replica – which certainly should address this, but as you have posted, it doesn’t appear to be doing so for you – so maybe I did try that first and it failed.
The -i switch on the compact is also interesting; I didn’t record in our helpdesk ticket that compacting was otherwise throwing errors; maybe that was merely a stroke of genius…

never experienced that before but maybe something in notes.ini is causing it (wild guess). Try rebuilding the ini by clearing out everything below the line Directory= then restart Notes and it will rebuild itself with defaults.
