Hello!

I have a DNS Server wich IP address is 192.168.0.222. Where can I configure the DNS Server in Domino to route messages externally?

In order to mail to the internet, you have to do these as follows:

  1. Obtain a public fixed IP from your ISP. This will be used in (3). Register your domain in advance, say that “abc.com”.

  2. Make sure your DNS is properly configured in the server that you assign as Mail Server.

  3. When open DNS in Administrative tools, you can see:

a. Forward Lookup Zone.

→ Here you create “New Zone…” (right click in the pane). Follow the provided step (check that all applied to your server). Put the zone name that you want. Such as “mail.abc.com”. Say that you registered “abc.com” with DNS ISP.

→ Then you will see the zone that you created. Inside the zone, you have to create “New Host (A)” and “New Mail Exchanger(MX)”. Same procedure as you create your zone. FINISHED.

b. Reverse Lookup Zone.

→ Right click, select “New pointer (PTR)”. Browse, then select the your server as you named before. Then you have to look for “MX Mail Exchanger file” that you created in Forward lookup. (Dont forget to put your public IP). FINISHED.

  1. Then you have to do next is contact your ISP on how to hook up your server to others Internet Domain. In my case, we need a “HANDLE” to connect internal mail server to other domain. Make sure that only 1 Public IP to be used. Your ISP will give you a username and password in order to log in to their web. This you have to use the given username and password to configure the “handle”. Handle is an alphanumerical. In ISP website, you have to create you own handle, and put your server information. Very simple and user friendly. You will get the result as soon as possible. FINISHED, Your domain in automatically can be accessed from anywhere.

  2. Test “ping” to your server by using your server public IP. Test ping to your “Host” and “Mail Exchanger” that you created before. If successful, mean you job is done dramatically.

  3. Then you try to email to outside. Test your hotmail or yahoo. And log on to internet mail, hotmail or yahoo, try to mail to your local mail.

  4. If you were using Lotus Notes, dont forget to delete an “*” in the Server Document. Otherwise you cannot email to outside but only can receive outside mail.

Domino is set up to refuse outside-to-outside mail transfers. This will prevent the mail system to be used as relay system for spam mail and other nuisances.

What you have to do is to allow only your mail addresses to pass through, e.g. all with abc.com. It is in the server’s Configuration document, under SMTP, Inbound.
