Hi , I have my Computer name as “xyz” . My Lotus domino is running on the Same computer “xyz” . Domino server Name is “abc/Hotel Group”
Now i want to change my computer name from “xyz” to new name “abc” which is the same as the lotus server name.
Bez as per lotus documentation the computer name and the Lotus domino server name should be the same.
I am having name resolution problems with my Lotus domino server>>“abc/Hotel Group” , when my lotus notes client users connect through the internet. Some users are working fine, but some users in china have “remote server not responding” error coming on their client.
I am thinking that as my “computer name” is “different” then the “lotus domino server” may be that`s the reason i am getting the above error with some users.
If i have to change the computer name to abc , do i have to reinstall the lotus domino server.
Any thought`s on this will be very very greatfull…

The computer name has nothing to do with you are being able to connect to the domino server or not. If you are having problems with name resolution or DNS. You can easily create a new connection document with the server nam abc/Hotel Group and the external IP address (no name).

That would be a connection document, not a location document! The connection document maps a server notes name to an IP address/DNS name and will allow the Notes client to see the server.
Use Trace in User Preferences → Ports to test connectivity.

Thanks Again .
Tracer is working fine when i have no server name in the Field.
in the “location” document(office)>>
Tab (Server)>>
Field Name(Home/MailServer)
Once i put the server name “abc/Hotel Group” .
and then again i start the trace
I get the same “remote server not responding error”
" unable to find path to the server " in log file
and when i remove the sever name from the field every thing is normal again

This is why you need a CONNECTION document.
Type: Local Area Network
Port: TCPIP
Server Name: abc/Hotel Group
On Advanced tab: Destination server address: IP address of Domino server
Subject: RE: Computer Name Vs Lotus Domino Name
Hi this the log message ones i created the connection document and ran the tracer again:-
Determining path to server abc/Hotel Group
Available Ports: TCPIP
Checking normal priority connection documents only…
Allowing wild card connection documents…
Enabling name service requests and probes…
Checking for abc/Hotel Group
Group on TCPIP using address ‘abc’
Unable to connect to abc/Hotel Group
on TCPIP (The remote server is not a known TCP/IP host.)
Checking low and normal priority connection documents…

Ok, so you have entered a hard-coded IP address into a connection document in your pernab. (This is not necessarily the best solution; entering a FQHN which can be resolved to the appropriate IP address via DNS would be far, far preferable – but only, of course, if the DNS servers available at that location have an entry for that hostname.) Now you need connectivity between client and server over port 1352, and this sounds like what you’re missing. Sounds like you’re outside the firewall, and port 1352 isn’t allowed through.
Or do I misread your post?
Subject: RE: Computer Name Vs Lotus Domino Name
We are using a asdl line on this connection to connect to the internet. I really donot know how can i add FQHN to resolve the ip address in the dns servers out here.
By the way i have other location which are working fine, without FQHN adding to dns servers on that location. Only this location has the problem.
Port 1352 is open on the domino server .
If it is not open it will not allow me to communicate when i remove the server name(abc\Hotel Group) from the Home/Mail server Field in the location document.
Onces the server name is removed from the above field everything is working fine …so there is no question of 1352 not being opened…
Subject: RE: Computer Name Vs Lotus Domino Name
Let’s forget the Location Document for the moment. You create a Connection Document, for server abc/Hotel Group, using IP Address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx. Then you try a File/Database/Open and you get an error that the “Server is not responding?” Then you try to trace to that server and you STILL get the error? And you are sure that the firewalls on both sides (this office and where the server is located) have port 1352 open?
Subject: RE: Computer Name Vs Lotus Domino Name
Yeah i am sure about that …
Bez i can access another lotus domino server which is located in hongkong from this location without any problem.
Subject: RE: Computer Name Vs Lotus Domino Name
After re-reading this thread, your problem is that if you put the server name in the Location Document, you can’t connect to the server. But if you remove the name, and keep the IP Address, you can connect. If it works without the name, then what is the harm of leaving it out? Other than the fact that the field is blank?

Thanks for the reply
I have created a new doc but same error keeps coming up.
But …as soon as i try to put my server name E.g.(abc/Hotel Group)
in the “location” document(office)>>
Tab (Server)>>
Field Name(Home/MailServer)
I get the error "Remote server not responding "
…but ones i remove the server name from the above field i am able to connect to the above server. No problem
I have another domino server (zzz/Hotel Group) in hongkong.
When i put this server name in the home/MailServer)in the location doument of my lotus client it work`s fine.
All my other branches have no problem in connecting to “both” the server . Only this branch in china has this unusual problem of showing "remote server not responding " while conneting to this specific sever (abc/Hotel Group)
