Ive copied/pasted bitmap files into a mail message but they dont get converted to jpeg or any other typeand are the same ssize asbeofre
Shouldnt they be converted?

All images should be compressed when you paste them into an email message. We are currently working on a bug discovered when copying the image from one Notes document to another. What is the source of the image you are pasting?
