I have a view with a categorized column “Name”, with a ascending sort. In the view properties I check & uncheck the value “Collapse all when database is first opened” until I am blue in the face. Either way, when I open the view, the twisties are always expanded. Is there another setting someplace else that would over-ride my setting in the view properties? This is not a embedded view, and there are no other categories or sorts in the view…

Check that the “On Open” setting in the Information tab of the View properties isn’t set to ‘Go to last opened document.’
It may not be the cause, but it’s worth testing…

If you have the view open in designer - looks like the client will expand to the document you currently have selected
