Client pauses / freezes on startup

Lotus Notes Client build v60_09252002. We have approx 35 workstations each running this client software. We have several of these PCs (P4 2.4G, 512MB) which have started to pause on start-up. The notes startup sequence usually is as follows for these troublesome PC’s: The splash screen appears for 2 minutes (during this time the task manager does not show the Lotus Notes application), then the splash screen dissapears and the notes window appears with just a menu bar and a grey body for 35 seconds (during this time, task manager shows Lotus Notes as “Not responding”). The task manager status will then change to “running” and the welcome screen will appear in the notes window and everything will function smoothly for 25 seconds. Then there is another pause where the task manager reports a status of “not responding” and notes is frozen for 35 seconds. Then everything comes alive again and operates smoothly for the remainder of the session. So, in summery, there are 3 pauses; 1st for 2m, 2nd for 35 seconds and 3rd for 35 seconds. This problem is not 100% consistent either - every now and again, there will only be one, two or even no pauses on startup. But generally the pauses are regular. The timing of the pauses are exactly the same on all affected PC’s. All other PC’s running don’t seem to have a problem with notes. Has anyone else come upon this problem before or does anyone know of a solution? Any help will be appreciated greatly!

Subject: Client pauses / freezes on startup

Questions:do you use networked id files or bookmark.nsf files or are any of your client data directories stored on the network? if so, there may be a mapping problem.

are the pauses for USERS or for WORKSTATIONS (i.e. if a particular user having a problem logs in at another instead does the problem follow him or does it remain at the old station for the next user?)

You could try deleting/renaming desktop.dsk and cache.dsk for one of the affected pcs to see if that makes any difference. (Some users have a vast workspace because they need a lot of workspace icons which all have to be checked for unread marks at startup etc.)

Not sure of any other reasons - maybe a reinstall of one affected pc may help…

Subject: RE: Client pauses / freezes on startup

Thanks for the advice. I have since discovered that it is user specific and have also discovered that if a user who is having the problem changes their password, the problem dissapears. The user.id file is stored over the network as well as all other data files for lotus. Does anyone know what could cause this and if it is preventable??? Thanks in advance.
