Client multiuser install does not work - data directory is set wrong

I’ve successfully installed multiuser notes client in Beta4, but in 6.0.1 it drives me crazy!

So, I have a Lotus Notes 6.0.1 client install package, on a Win2k terminal server.

I start the installation and choose “multi user install” on this clean system, no notes client installed yet, no old registry entries.

Install finishes, I start Notes, it asks me for my name and domino server, asks for my password and starts replicating my bookmark.nsf from the domino server… just after the replication finished, it says that it cannot create a local replica for my bookmark.nsf and if I want to create a copy. No, I don’t want to, and then the clients shuts down.

Further analyzing shows this:

  • a notes.ini is created during client startup in the \WINDOWS\notes.ini

  • this notes.ini contains “c:\program files\lotus\notes” as DIRECTORY (!!!)

  • therefore, Notes tries to store the user.id and bookmark.nsf and so on in c:\program files\lotus\notes, and NOT in c:\document and settings<username>\local settings..

  • even if I set DIRECTORY in notes.ini to the correct c:\document and settings<username>.… directory, Notes puts it’s data files into that directory, but shows the same error message “cannot create local replica of your bookmark.nsf…” and shuts down.

In fact I’m very astonished… 6.0.1 should provide superior tested multiuser functionality, but it simply does not work here.

And I’ve re-installed several times, with and without using the software control panel of the windows system, in different directories and so on.

So, after I have a lot more gray hair, does anyone have any hint?

Does multiuser work for anyone?

Same issue.

We migrated the Domino Directory design to 6.0.1, and tried the Multiuser installation. The same problem happens when a client installation get “screwed up” on a Multiuser PC, we need to downgrade the user to “non-roaming”, uninstall the client completely and reinstall it as well.

Any idea where you’d find some references to the Directories used by Notes 6 (apart from Registry)… Hope they didn’t “hard-code” them in the application (I found that the PAB filename is hardcoded in some places, this is mandatory to work with names.nsf, and renaming the file i.e. to names6.nsf will crash the client).

Did you guys find an answer to this ? … i have the same issue on 6.0.2CF running on w2k adv sp3 … i’ve tried editing the default notes.ini, changing the registry etc … no luck. you can bodge it by creating a data directory somewhere else and manually moving the files the client setup created in c:\program files\lotus\notes, and then change the notes.ini for the user your logged in as to match the new data path, but thats a complete hash and un-workable for any more than , well one or two users …

I also had the missing pernames.ntf error, but fixed that by putting the Shared Directory statement in the default notes.ini …

the multi user install does seem very hit and miss, some people on the forum seem to have had no problems while others have really sore heads …
