Client Login Hanging

We have one user who is having a repeating error with their Lotus Notes version 7 client. The only way to overcome the error is to uninstall and then reinstall the program. They are using a notebook that is running Windows XP.

You can open and close notes several times, but eventually it just won’t open anymore. It goes as far as the login screen. You type the password and just get a blank screen. The client is not responding anymore. You can leave it for hours, and you do not get any error message. If you look at the Windows Task Manager, the program shows as not responding. We found ~notes.lck file, however, deleting this file does not help.

We have now uninstalled and reinstalled several times. This error is now occuring with increased frequency.

Can anyone help?

When you uninstall notes do you delete the .nsfs that are not removed as part of the uninstallation?

I’d be thinking corrupt names.nsf from the symptoms you describe (or corrupt location doc in the names.nsf) Reinstalling without deleting it is just keeping the old one along with its corruption.

Uninstall and delete everything in data and program directory to do with notes (of course back up anything you don’t want to lose!).

Then try reinstallation.
