Client 8.5 FP1 Install Failure

Am using Desktop Policy & SmartUpgrade to rollout 8.5 FP1 clients. An 3 different PC/Users so far, the process comes up and says there is a new release (8.5 FP1) to install, it runs thru the install but at the end comes up with the following error message “Upgrade did not complete successfully. Please try again or check with your Notes administrator.”

The funny thing is, that when you restart the client, it did upgrade to V8.5 FP1 and the NAB gets updates with V8.5 FP1.

Before I start rolling this out to the masses, I need to clean this up. Any ideas?

In the Smart Upgrade Kit DB here are the settings I’m using :

Source configuration → Notes Standard

Source version → *

Operating System —> Windows/32

Localization → English

Install Type → happens with both Client only or all client

Destination version → Release 8.5 FP1

Restart Notes after Upgrade → Checked

Location → On a shared network drive

Full path to update kit → drive:path\setup.exe ( I already manually unpacked it)

Optional arguments → /S /v"/qn"

Subject: I had to do this for it to work.

I ran into the same issue.

I then switched the smart upgrade to point to the original package .exe I downloaded from IBM.

I use these arguments: -s -a /s /v"/qb+"

It’s slow as it probably spends most of the time extracting it, but it’s working for now.

I’m still in experimentation with trying the extracted .exe

Subject: Known bug with using Smart Upgrade with 8.5 FP1 Basic Configuration

I assume you are installing a Basic Configuration?

Please open a PMR with Lotus Support concerning this as it may help expedite getting a new Basic Configuration 8.5 FP1 Install kit that avoids the problem…

The Install Kit is returning a -2 to the Smart Upgrade Code… A return code of 0 is expected on Sucess.

The Upgrade is completing successfully and we just need to debug why the kit is returning a -2.

Here’s the SPR you should reference when you make the support call…

SWSN7TRCQD: Return incorrect value of variable “%errorlevel%” after install or uninstall 8.5 FP1

If you want to send me the Smart Upgrade Tracking log files for one of these Notes Clients I can confirm it’s the same problem

Subject: FP1 install error on standard client

I’m getting the similar messages All on the Notes 8 Standard Client (Eclipse).

Installer will report install was not successful but FP works fine.

I’ve seen a few users prompted that the install was successful , they then click ok and an install failed message pops up, again Notes works fine.

I was running the installer in its uncompressed form on a network share. I’m now going to try SmartUpgrade with the original compressed downloadedd file as per previous post.

Subject: I can only get it to work uncompressed.

Working on Standard config.

I run the standard uncompressed .exe beside it’s deploy folder and updateSite.zip file via smart upgrade and all I ever get is InstallShield warnings about what command line paramaters to use followed by another installshield error that simply says “1158:”.

I’m missing something here…?

I can still only get the original unpackaged .exe to work.

Subject: Workaround/Fix

Worked with John Paganetti from IBM offline on this issue. It was not the PSR he mentioned. The solution is to change the name of setup.exe to setup1.exe in both the file system where you are storing it and in the upgrade kit. Here’s his explanation “It only happens when upgrading to a FP… We take a different (buggy) path in Smart Upgrade because the FP installer does not have a .msi file like a Full Notes Client Install Kit”. They believe they have identified and fixed this pathing issue on any Fix Packs going forward from here.
