Subject: Yes - There’s A Draft Technote about it
Hi Michael,
See the Draft Technote I have included below, which details this setting that was introduced in 8.0.2. Feel free to reply with any questions, as I try to check back often.

Problem
Is it possible to modify the Notes 8 Standard Client display to implement the database document gutter and check mark selection column that is available in the Notes 8 Basic Client and clients from earlier code streams?
Yes, starting in Notes 8.0.2, users can enable the Notes 8 Standard Client to display the database
document gutter and check mark selection column. This feature is disabled by default and can be enabled manually by the user or a Domino administrator.
To enable this feature, users can select the Additional Option, called “Show check marks in margin for selected documents”, within their User Preferences (File > Preferences).
When this option is set, an INI parameter is added to the user’s notes.ini file, called
“ViewsCheckMarkSel”, and it is set to “1”.
To disable this feature, the user can de-select this Additional Option. If the INI parameter
already exists in the user’s notes.ini file, then it will be set to “0”.
As the Notes 8 Basic Client already provides this ability, use of this INI parameter
will have no affect on it.
Administrators who are interested in enabling this option for a number of users
can supply this INI parameter above through a custom policy. An SPR has
been created to review supplying an easier means to enable this option in
a future maintenance release.
This INI parameter acts as a global preference and is recognized by the Notes 8
Standard Client code starting with Notes 8.0.2 when handling Java-based views
available in Personal Information Management (PIM) databases, such as, mail,
calendar, To Do’s and contacts. This column already displays for regular, non-PIM
databases, such as the personal journal.
This feature is backward compatible and can therefore be used to display this
column for PIM databases in prior releases of Notes/Domino 8.
