Caution on the 6.5 beta

If you’re anything like me (hopefully you aren’t), you like to participate in Lotus’ beta programs and offer feedback about new versions. And if you’re more like me, you like to install the beta versions in parallel on your computer, so you can access both versions, perhaps even at the same time. So therefore, after downloading the install, you would run it, and point it to a new Notes 6.5 directory of some kind for installation.

BEWARE!

The 6.5 install writes to the Notes 6 directory listed in your registry, no matter what folder you tell it during the install procedure. So it might say “would you like to install to c:\notes?” And you would say “no… I’d like to install to c:\notesbeta.” And it would say “Okay.” and then proceed to install to c:\notes, user selection be damned.

So… be careful.

Thanks for the tip.

My solution - install in a VMware virtual machine - http://www.vmware.com/

Works a charm and doesn’t break the Notes installation on my “real” client.

Subject: another reason for the way it is in the FAQ

where you rename directories for each version but install in the same place
