Categorized column from list

Hi, I have a single document with three fields for info about up to five people: name1, area1, slot1; name2, area2, slot2; etc. I want to display the information thru various views by name, by area. Name is a names field. Area is a 2-digit number from a dialog list. Slot is text description.

For the by name view, the categorized column contains name1:name2:name3 for as many as exist. Column 2 is a list of the matching slots slot1:slot2:slot3.

The output is categorized correctly. With the proper slot under the name.

name1

slot1

name2

slot2

name3

slot3

For the view by area, I created a categorized column with area1:area2:area3. Separate non-categorized columns have name1:name2:name3 and slot1:slot2:slot3. If area1=98, area2=99, and area3=98, I get

98

name1 slot1

name2 slot2

name3 slot3

99

name1 slot1

name2 slot2

name3 slot3

The names appear twice. While I would like

98

name1 slot1

name3 slot3

99

name2 slot2

Any ideas?

The problem you’ve got is one of normalization. One document of many categories doesn’t sort correctly. Ideally they should be in separate documents. But since that’s not the case …A workaround that I’ve seen is to use a backslash ("") divider and put all of the pertinent single-row items together:

r1 := Name1 + @Char(92) + Slot1 + @Char(92) + Area1;

r2 := Name2 + @Char(92) + Slot2 + @Char(92) + Area2;

r3 := Name3 + @Char(92) + Slot3 + @Char(92) + Area3;

r1:r2:r3

This creates multiple categories in one column and maintains the associaton between fields. It should resolve the issue.
