This worked fine until last week (and the user swears nothing on her computer has been added, deleted or modified). User is getting PDF files – zipped – from one particular correspondent. She can open the zip. She cannot open the PDF. She also gets unzipped PDFs which she cannot open either. If she tries to view the PDFs, she gets “The viewer display window could not be initialized.”
If we detach the file to the desktop, then open, it works fine; but she’s getting sometimes over a dozen of these a day in a very busy environment. And other kind of document (Word or Excel docs, for instance) will open just fine from the Notes application, and can be viewed without any problems.
I’m assuming that this is a Notes issue since Adobe works fine from the desktop - but I did run a repair on it anyway. No change.
I have reconfigured Notes (removed the bookmarks, names.nsf, desktop and wiped the INI to the top five lines) and everything else is working fine.
Any direction, ideas, solutions? All suggestions gratefully accepted!

Dumb question, but is this person choosing View or Open within Notes?

Subject: I had the same problem…
I had the same problem with TIFs. The problem seemed to be that the “.tif” file extension became, somehow, unassociated with the application that opened it.
I think I went into Start > Explore > Tools > Folder Options > File Types and deleted the TIF file association(s). Then I double-clicked on a TIF file, Windows asked me to associate the TIF file type with an application, and from then on it worked okay.

Had the same issue. Fixed it by totally uninstalling client, removing all Notes related files and then started over. Every time I did one of the above things without doing the other I’d have the same problem.

Oh my gosh, Ryan, that’s a scary solution – pardon me if I try Lawrence’s first! But thank you for the solution even if I hope I don’t have to use it.
Melissa – we’ve tried both “view” and “open.” The Viewer throws the error “the viewer display window could not initialize.” I know in some cases, even if you can’t open, you can VIEW what’s in the zip file and open the individual docs from there. Not this time.
Thanks to all three of you for your help. I’ll let you know what – if anything – actually works.

No worries.
I can just tell you that this problem got dragged on and on cause I kept trying to fix it easily. And when I thought I fixed it, that is I could open pdf files, I couldn’t print them if they were opened directly from Notes. If I saved them and then opened them I didn’t have any problems.
In the end, it took me just over an hour to back up id file and names.nsf, uninstall it, delete all folders related to Notes, install it again, set it up and create new replicas. Wish I did it straight away.
Good luck and please let me know what fixed it.
Cheers
Ryan
P.S. I re-installed Acrobat Reader at the same time just to be sure.
Subject: SOLVED: Can’t open Adobe docs from Notes
Ryan – reinstalling Acrobat did the trick. My user was on 4.0, which had been working fine. Uninstalled it, reinstalled 5.0 from the website and the .pdf opened without a hitch. Thank you VERY much for that clue – I was assuming that since OTHER .pdf files were opening that the problem was Notes. Apparently not.
Have a great day and thanks again for your help!
