Can't find the option to "Enable "Synchronize Contacts" on the Replicator"

I can’t for the life of me figure out how to get to the option “Enable “Synchronize Contacts” on the Replicator”.

We have an 8.5 server, and the client is running 8.5.1.

When I go to the File > Preferences > contacts screen, I do not have the above option. It looks like it is based on an old template best I can tell. (This is the same as for when I’m in contacts and got to More > Preferences).

I have tried upgrading the template of names.nsf on the client (I get to this DB by going to Open > Contacts).

After upgrading (and before), when I go to the database properties > design, it tell me the template is based on “StdR4PersonalAddressBook” and “Template version 8.5.1 (22/09/2009)”.

Saying “R4” in the name above sounds suspicious, but that is always what comes up when replacing the design with the latest “pernames.ntf”.

I feel I’m missing something obvious - but got no clue were to start. I have Googled for a while and can’t find any one else with the issue.

PS: I’m also happy to attach screen shots - but can’t figure out how to do that either… Not my day.

Subject: Another possible resolution

We recently ran into the same issue and this is how we resolved it (if anyone is interested).

Client is 8.5.x (Basic mode).

Open your contacts. On the File menu click View and select “Advanced Menus”.

Click File>Applications>Replace Design.

In the Replace Design box, scroll down the list and select “Personal Address Book”, a local path with “pernames.ntf” should appear. Click the “Replace” button and “Yes” to confirm.

Restart Notes and you should now be able to see the Sync Contacts option in Contact preferences.

Cheers.

Subject: Open your local address book(names.nsf) & More - Preferences

Hi,Just open your local address book (names.nsf).

Go to More - Preferences & enable the synchronization of contacts on replicator.

There is no problem with the template, the template name is Std4personaladdressbook only

Subject: The option is not there…

Thanks for the reply.

My issue is the option is not there. Going via File > Preferences > Contacts or via Contacts > More > Preferences, I get the same view, both without the option.

I have uploaded some screen shots of both here so you can see - and let help me figure out if I’m going insane!

Thanks.

PS: When looking here, I can see that there is something wrong with my template - but not a clue how to fix it.

Subject: names.nsf

Replace design of your names.nsf using the local Pernames.ntf (“Personal Address Book”) template. Pls. let us know if this fixes the problem. Notes Setup is supposed to do this automatically when you upgrade the Notes client.

Subject: Replacing the design looks the same

Thanks again for the response.

I have replaced the design again, and it looks the same.

I have also tried using the template from 2 of our servers (in case my local one is out of date), and it still looks the same.

I have added some more screen shots here of the template I’m selecting, then one of the sidebar of the template, with the properties dialogue box:

I have also opened the template (pernames.ntf) up in the designer to see if there are any different properties, and if the “(PersonalAddressBookProfile)” form looked different. I could not see anything that stood out as to why it was happening.

I have also looked on a couple of other users computers, and they are having the same issue (both Windows and Mac).

Thanks again.

Subject: need more information

Open names.nsf in Designer and display the list of Forms. Find the (PersonalAddressBook) form and see if there is a checkmark in the column after “Last modified by” (shown by circle)

If there is, look for the “Design” tab in the lower (left) half of the programmer’s pane and click on it. You should see a checkmark next to “Prohibit design refresh…” UN-check this box.

Then replace design of your names.nsf again. This should fix the problem.

If you do not see a checkmark in either place, please let us know.

Subject: Fixed!

After looking further in Designer, I noticed that the (PersonalAddressBookProfile) looked like the old style in pernames.ntf.

So what I did (the summarised version) was to install 8.5 on a new machine, and not link it to a server or anything. Once installed, I copied out the pernames.ntf, exited my local Notes, and replaced the file by the same name. I then did a replace design using the new template, and that appears to have fixed it!

The old template was the same on both of our Domino servers (not sure how template synchronising works) - but for some reason my belief is that the old version of the template as managed to replicate to both servers and all users (I noticed that my replication tab has a “Application Templates (NTFs)” entry).

So my current plan is to wait over night and see if the template is replaced automatically by the server for all users.

Subject: But it is still very odd…

Looking at the source template for the working names.nsf DB’s, I notice that the template version is “8.5 (21/10/2008)” (that is the version of Notes I installed to copy it from).

I’m wondering if there has been a regression somewhere between 8.5 and 8.5.1 FP3. As the broken template had a newer version number???

Again the screen shot is here:

Subject: just checked…

I don’t have a copy of FP3, but I checked pernames.ntf for FP4 and the template is correct.

Subject: We had the same problem…

…fortunately only with one user.

Looks like there are parts in the local adressbook that won’t be updated correctly by the design update.

As far as I remember we created a brand new adressbook and just added his adresses from the old one.

Subject: My final solution

The final solution I had for this issue was to do the following:Get the latest template from an 8.5.1 FP4 install and copy to the servers replacing the version that was currently there. (To be safe I scheduled down time and did this with the servers off then restarted).

Then for users that were still having the issue, I did a replace design (not refresh) with the current pernames.ntf template, ensuring “Inherit future design changes” was selected.

So far, this appears to have resolved the issue.
