Cannot install Domino 8.5 on I-Series 5.4

When running the Restore License Program command for Domino 8.5 option 10, rstlicpgm licpgm(5733L85) dev(*savf) option(10), our machine just goes to 100 plus percent CPU utilization, the command goes to a svfw status, and never completes. I let it run for 6 hours over the weekend, which should be more than enough time even with the code conversion, before finally having to endjobabn on the session. Anyone else having this problem ? I have re-downloaded the code for Domino and FTP’ed it over to the 400 a few times, still no luck. Never had a problem with this through many releases except for this time.

Subject: Program Conversion is mandatory during install on i 5.4.

Brian, This is classic symptom of program conversion. With Domino 8.5, program conversion is mandatory during install on i 5.4. Because the LIBNOTES *SRVPGM is so large, this is a LONG-running process. This is a change from 80x where program conversion occurs during i 6.1 installs, but not i 5.4. Six hours+ is definitely one of the longer conversion times I’ve seen; it is dependent on your processor’s speed. Check that you have the latest maint. applied:

All of the program conversion occurs in SLIC, so if there is an issue with conversion there could be some VLOGs. Issues in this area would need to be addressed by IBM Support and the OX component.

Abstract

Learn about the implications of program conversion when installing Lotus Domino 8.5 for i on IBM i 5.4 and i 6.1.

Content

Read the following information carefully and plan for additional time required to convert Domino programs during the installation or upgrade process.

i 5.4
Plan for additional time during the install of Domino 8.5 on i 5.4. Regardless of the install method (Setup.exe, LODRUN, RSTLICPGM) program conversion will occur during the installation process and cannot be deferred as with prior releases of Domino (e.g. 8.0.1, 7.0.3). If using the RSTLICPGM commands, the value specified for the RSTLICPGM FRCOBJCVN keyword - *SYSVAL, *YES, *NO - does not impact program conversion; it will always occur during the installation of Domino on i 5.4. The time required for program conversion, in addition to the product installation, can be from 10 minutes or up to 2-3 hours or longer depending on the system’s performance characteristics and concurrent system activity.

Be sure that you have met all of the prerequisites for installation - including ending all server-related jobs - to ensure a successful install.

… etc.

Subject: Thanks

Hello, thanks for your reply. I meet all the hardware and software requirements on the I Series side, and I know about the conversion, but I didnt think it would run 6 hours. This place lives on Notes / Domino and if I take it down for 10 minutes people get jumpy, never mind six hours !

Subject: No need to end the Domino server(s)

You only need to end any beta 8.5 Domino servers. All non 8.5 Domino servers can remain up while you are doing the RSTLICPGM.

I see that this is contrary to what is stated in technote 7013151 http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=463&uid=swg27013151 and this will be changed.

Subject: Technotes updated and republished

Two technotes that describe installation procedures and program conversion are updated and live on the
Web reflecting Charlie’s comments; not necessary to end pre-Domino 8.5 servers during installation.
