Can’t get Notes to launch offline:

We are running 8.5.1 clients on XP PCs and have implemented File Server Roaming. We are trying to roll out 8.5.1 clients to a group of laptops users. When the laptops are docked We’re good to go. However when the laptops are disconnected, the client’s won’t launch.

We get prompted for the password and after the correct password is entered, Notes starts to look for the home/mail server. When it can’t find it, because the laptop is disconnected, Notes gives the “The remote server is not a know TCP/IP host.” messagebox.

In addition, the text under the status bar in the splash screen states, “Unable to find any path to HomeServerName/OU/O because The remote server is not a known TCP/IP host.”

When we hit “OK” on the messsgebox, Notes closes.

We do have an Organization Desktop Policy that has the Mail Settings as follows:

“Mail file location = on Server” and “Set value and prevent changes” is selected under “how to apply these settings” but we have an Explicit policy for the laptop users with these settings removed.

We’d thought enabling prompt for location at start up in the Notes Client Configuration and selecting “offline” would solve this, but we don’t have that option in our Additional Options list???!!!

We also tried to add the PromptForLocation=1 in the notes.ini without success.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Subject: Found a ugly solution (hosts or connection doc)

I just found 2 possible solutions.

  1. create a entry in the hosts file so the client is able to resolve the ip adress of the server.

  2. create a connection document and specify the ip-adress of the server.

This prevents the Client from presenting this error message.

I think the error occours in the “Java” part of the Notes 8.5 Client. This might be the reason why no location is displayed during the password promt.

Therefore choosing a different locaion is not a solution.
