There is no problem running that scenario. Of course features specific to Domino 6.5 cannot be used in the 6.5 client running against a pre-6.5 server.
I have been running 6.5 since the first beta, and there has been no issues with running against servers - 5.0.x and 6.x.

Our server is 6.02CF2 and about a dozen users so far are happily using the 6.5 client with no loss of features. Of course I did have to put the 6.5 mail tempate on the server (renamed the file and the design name) and used a policy document to automatically switch 6.5 users over to this mail template when upgraded. So we have every client feature including the new mail functions like the followup function, IM integration, CSV export, etc. Nothing doesn’t work. We will eventually upgrade the server too, for the bug fixes primarily, but this will be after a bit more confidence building of the other members of my team over the releases stability.
