Can I install 8.5.1 server on laptop and use it from client on the same box?

Can I install the Domino server 8.5.1 (or whatever is the latest available) on an XP laptop – 2G – and use it from the Notes 8.5.1 client installed on the same box?

All I want to do is learn about XPages.

I know XP isn’t supported by the server – I don’t care about support – but can anyone tell me definitely that it will not run at all?

What would I do for a server id? Do I actually need one? Last time I set up a Domino server was 1998 or so, so I do not remember much. I dimly recall making a certifier id, and stamping out a server id and so on, but I have forgotten a lot. I already have the client installed with my own id; that’s what I want to use with this local server. I am pretty sure i do not need a certifier here.

Please clue me in how to go about this, or if it’s a really dumb idea, please explain why. Thank you.

Yes of course you can do it.Just run the server installer and install in a different directory than your client.

Figure out a domain and server name of your own, it will create a server ID, a cert ID and an administrator ID. Use the lattest to connect to your server via your client using localhost.

Thank you. However the box is actually a 1G laptop, and with the designer and client also running that’s a pretty tight squeeze. It would help a lot if I could trim the server’s memory requirement.

I turned off certain tasks I don’t need, like statlog.

sh ta shows about ten instances of “Database Server” running. How do I reduce this to, say, a single instance? I don’t see anything in notes.ini that sounds like “run ten copies of this thing”.

Is there anything else I can do to reduce the server’s memory consumption? The only user is me.

Subject: Sure - directions inside

Andy Pedisich has a document here that explains how to even set up a multi partition system - I use the same method inside a vmware image just to keep work and sandbox separate.
