Hi,
I am currently running R5 for development purposes. I have both server and clients on the same machine.
I have obtained a copy of the R6 trial and would like to upgrade my system temporarily in order to check out the new features and hopefully upgrade my accreditation.
I will have to re-install R5 later, until the decision is made to upgrade fully.
I have several databases that I use personally and need to update daily. If these updates were made in R6, would the databases still be useable in R5 (assuming that I hadn’t made any design changes to them)?
Cheers,
Joan
P.S. Apologies if this is a duplicate post. Browser trouble, I’m afraid.

You’d probably have to revert them to the R5 database format (using compact)

Thanks for the response Tom.
I think I’ll go with the suggestion of running both R5 & R6 clients on my machine, keeping the databases separate.
However, if I have any little slip-ups (which I often do) it’s good to know that I can get the databases back.
Thanks again.

You can do design work in R6 with R5 servers running. Just dont use any of the new features that arent on R5. You can also have both clients open at the same time on one PC. Open up your R5 first and the R6 second. I use R5 for testing user IDs and R6 for Development. R6 Administrator also works on R5 servers. The broadcasting feature in R6 is so much better than R5.
You cant make a local copy of a DB from 6 and then use it on 5. But you can do it the other way around. If you have development servers you should be just fine.
We do almost all design work using R6…Will be putting R6 on 2 test servers later this week.
Hope the info helps
James

Many thanks for that. I hadn’t even considered that I could have both clients on the one PC. That means I can get on with my day to day work in R5 while doing my testing and training on the R6 client using separate databases.
Better than I had hoped!
Thanks again.
