I am trying to set up a type of scheduling for our clients - and I want to use the basic calendar design in the mail template - but I need to do my own modifications to it - I thought it would just be easier if there was already some in depth documentation on the database template - rather than researching it myself.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but there is none. Lotus have consistently refused to document the mail template in any way, shape or form. (There are suspected reasons for this,…)
Which doesn’t help you much unfortunately. But if you run into problems just ask either here or on the OpenNTF forum - many of us have a fair bit of hard earned knowledge of it.
