Can a web service be preloaded?

I have several R7 web services that I am calling from a browser-based application. The services are slow to load, and I am afraid the users will think the system is never going to respond, even though I tell them to wait patiently.

Once the individual web services are loaded, they run very fast. I mitigate the problem by combining as many public functions as possible in a single web service because the startup time seems to be service-related, rather than function-related.

Is there a setting in the server.ini or elsewhere that will reduce this lag, such as pre-loading the web service? A web service takes much longer to load than an agent. It feels like I am loading a servlet, but servlets could be pre-loaded. I am tempted to revert to agents, but I somewhat prefer the web services paradigm now that I’ve got an approach that works well.

Thanks for any suggestions.

I’d be surprised if the code is taking a while to load because of the fact that you are running it via a webservice…

Can you run the webservice code via a web agent to see if there is any improvement in performance?

Andrew.

Thanks for the response. The problem occurs even if I just return a simple text string immediately as the only thing the web service returns. Agents running on the same server take no time to run at all, even the first time. The server is very fast with everything except cranking up these web services for the first time. So yes, it is surprising, but there must be a setting to preload these services somewhere.
