Buying servers & per-processor licenses

We will be upgrading our server and network infrastructure, and plan to combine our two discrete Domino servers onto a single high-powered machine. Actually, we plan to make it a clustered pair.

If I understand correctly, we would have to buy four licenses, if each machine in the pair is a dual-cpu unit. If that is true, would it be better to buy the fastest single-processor machines, and buy only two licenses? It’d be nice to save that $1500/year, but is that unwise penny-pinching

Our current situation is: Three licenses, one dual-cpu 2.4GHz machine for one server, and one 450MHz machine for a second, lightly-used server. We have about 200 users, all with client and webmail, and quite a few other applications.

With that number of users I suspect that you could easily get by with two fast single processor boxes. But why don’t you leave your options open and buy machines with a second processor slot and not populate it at first. Something like a HP DL380 and start out with single processors and see how it goes. If you find that it is inadequate or your needs grow just pop in the second processor and pay the piper.
