Here’s a strange but reproduceable thing that happened to me today (6.5 Notes client, Windows XP).
I have a database that opens to a frameset. If I open the database using Database-Open, I get the frameset. If I open the database from the list of databases in the database folder thing on the left-hand side of the client, I get the frameset. If I double-click the database icon on the workspace, I get the frameset. No problems.
However, I have a user who created a bookmark to the database by opening the database and dragging the database tab from the top of the client screen to the left-hand sidebar (just underneath the Favorites folders). When the user opens the database with the new bookmark, they don’t get the frameset when they open the database, just a view.
What’s even stranger is, if you remove the bookmark and create it by dragging the workspace icon to the left-hand sidebar, the bookmark will open the database properly.
I’ve tried all manner of restarting the client and deleting database icons and bookmarks and clearing the cache file, and the situation is always the same: if the bookmark is created by dragging the tab it opens to a view, but if it’s created by dragging the icon it opens to the frameset.
Seems strange to me. I even tried this with a completely different database (that also opens to a frameset), with the same results.
The bookmark created from the window tab points to a view (instead of to the database), that is why that view opens.
Now, this behaviour was changed somewhere in the R5 stream. From then on, dragging the window button when a view was displayed would create a database link. Before that, it would create a view link.
(Dragging a window button of a document always creates a document link.)
So, what you see shouldn’t be right.
When you right-click the window tab and select “Bookmark…”, what is displayed at the bottom of the dialog (“as type”) ?
If it says “default”, it should create a database bookmark.
That behavior has been driving me nuts for some time now. I’ve always just dragged the window title to the bookmark bar - but now I’ve used right click and it works beautifully. Thanx for your post!
Thanks Jan. If I right-click the window tab and select “Bookmark”, the type is “- Default -”. In fact, if I create the bookmark that way, it works properly. If I drag the tab to the left-hand bookmark bar, though, I get the behavior I described earlier.
You’re probably right about the view versus database link. I hadn’t thought about that, but it makes perfect sense. I guess the question would be why right-clicking a tab to create a bookmark would have different behavior than dragging the tab to create the bookmark.
It’s a while since I know, but so that you are aware, I have had this problem also… In one database the drag and drop works fine, and in another, the drag and drop opens the views, when re-accessing from the bookmark.
If you give the Frameset a title though (Frameset properties - Title) then you will drag the frameset not the view, so the database will open correctly.
