Blog template vs Discussion Template

Hello

Aplolgies for asking what is probably a straightforward question, but can anybody point me towards any documentation on the pros and cons of the Blog vs Discussion templates available in Notes/Domino.

I am working with a company who wish to implement a bulletinboard on their intranet. They have previously used the OpenNTF DomBulletin but have had a few issues.

They would like to have separate boards per territory (but to be able to search across and view all boards) and to have certain topics/categories per territory (different per territory). Users should not be able to create topics/categories (admin can) but can create and respond to postings/threads. An ability for a user to sign up to receive email notification about new postings (optionally for responses) on certain topics is also required.

I have created db’s with both StdR7Disc and StdR7Blog but have not yet been able to find any information about which one should be used in which circumstances.

I’d be very grateful for any pointers that may be given

regards

Simon

Hi,

I’d suggest you take a look at Steve Castledine’s website. There’s a plethora of info but the following link will take to his ‘Blog Template’ archive section.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Steve.

Yep I’ve had a good look round Steve’s website and to be honest I thought using the blog template was a done deal.

That was until I tried to use it and selected the discussion template by mistake. Now I’m in two minds as to which would be best but I can’t find anywhere a discussion of the merits of each

cheers

Simon

Simon,

For information regarding the Discussion database, go to the file menu bar and choose Help, About This Database and then Help, Using This Database. Both documents will give you detailed information regarding the discussion database.

The Discussion database allows people to post and others reply to the post. Whereas the blog database is for, in my humble opinion, one user to post information and others can respond to that person’s posts. From the About This Database page in the blog database- “This database allows you to create individual or team based “blog” websites or other types of content based websites.”

You may want to look at the Teamroom database. Here is a link to a technote. Although it lists R5, don’t let that stop you. The document does have great information.
