Blackberry Installation

Presently we have three Domino Servers, a web server, sametime server and an Enteprise server. The Sametime Server is a very small server.

The Web Server is a resonable size and our Enterprise Server is new with 3.0 GHz Dual Core processors and 4 GB of RAM.

Would it be safe to say that I should install BES on the Enterprise Server? I believe the Blackberry goes out to the device over port 3189 or 3101. The Enterprise Server is inside the Firewall. Does Blackberry require access to the BES from the outside world or is everything started from inside the router?

Thanks for your time

I should have added that my first thoughts were to put the BES on the Web Server as it does not have an extensive load. The other thing is there will only be between 10 and 15 Blackberry users.

Thanks gain

It is recommended that you put the BES on its own server.

We currently run a BES behind our firewall.

We have a opened 3101 with natting to the server.

Be aware that if you are going to use the blackberry browser then you BES needs access to DNS , remember that HTTP\HTTPs will also need to pass through the firewall.

Hi.

All said by John is right. Make sure your BES and Enterprise servers are connected all the time and can communicate at all times with full resolution of FQDNs of both machines.

Plus do check the hardware requirements for BES server prior to deployment ! Do not compromise on this.

The problem that I am having with this is we have three servers and three domino licenses for a small organization, 100 users. The cost of an additonal server and Domino License for 10 to 15 Blackberry Users is a costly solution. I understand that everyone recommends the separate server but has anyone put the BES on with the Sametime? Would a solution be to move the Sametime to the iNotes server and then run the BES on a server by itself?

Thanks for your time.

Is the web server accessed externally or is it just for internal use?

If it is internal only I would run the web services on the enterprise server and the BES on it own hardware.

Both BES and Sametime are resource hungry if fully utilized… so if your machine can easily handle both of them … only then go for it.

Drawback: Both will be machine dependend. If there is problem with machine, both will go down, if there is problem with one and u need to restart, then other also will be unavailable for that time.

Thanks to all for their input. It looks like a seperate server and license.

Thanks again.
