I’m new to domino and have been put in charge of installing and setting up a Notes server running on redhat 9 (seems to be working fine so far). So far we have 1 test bed machine on it’s own network running and also have the server installed and running on our production server. Right now we are using it internally for calendar and scheduling. We plan to use it as primary email as soon as I can figure out how to route mail in and out (any recommendations for reading material?).
One question I do have is this: we want to make use of the ‘contacts’ functionality, but we need it to automatically be populated with all user info and updated when users are added. Has anyone attempted this before? Remember I’m new to this and still learning, so be gentle.
Thanks,
steve

I’m not sure if this is what you are asking for, but the contacts are easily maintained within the Domino directory. As an administrator, you have the ability to add and change info as needed.

Why and how do you want to “make use of the ‘contacts’ functionality”? If you mean that you want the info in Person documents in the server’s Directory to exist in your users’ Personal Address Books, this is a very, very, very bad idea, for the reason that, as you are seeing, it can’t be synchronized. So don’t do it; in fact do all you can to dissuade your users from copying person docs from server address book(s) to their personal address book. Users can resolve addresses from the server’s address book(s) as well as from local (“mobile”) directory catalogs that do sync with the server.
Did I understand you correctly?

OK you did understand me correctly. I realize “make use of the ‘contacts’ functionality” is vague but what I mean by that is it would be nice to be able to browse the directory through this particular view. If that’s not possible, that’s fine. Just one more thing to explain to the users how to access.
One other thing I am trying to find out is if Location settings can be modified for a group of users through a policy? Or does it have to be a manual process done on each client?
Thanks

Desktop policies do indeed modify location docs as well as other client settings, and can be applied to individuals one at a time, many at a time, or automatically based on their location in the organizational (namespace) tree.
