currently clients running 6.5 on citrix ervers with local notes data foldersmoveing to 8.5.1 on xen servers
is it possible to have the clients’ local names.nsf, bookmark.nsf, etc upgrade to the 8.5.1 templates automatically on first launch of 8.5.1 on the xen server? if so, how?

The seamless mail upgrade policy will do this with the mail file when the new Client comes up.
I also imagine you could send an email with a button that when clicked runs an agent to do all the Client-side upgrades you’d like, but that would require user interaction.
If it’s all centralized on one server (XEN) then you may be able to script the update of all the files using the command-line server instructions.
We need someone more familiar with upgrade procedures to comment on methods better than this.
