Our organization has changed name and therefore the email addresses must be updated. I will add the old internet address to the shortname so that for the time being also mail addressed to the old domain will be delivered. This however can only be done for a few months. Since the sender is not informed that he used the old domain I expect that a lot of messages will be undeliverable once I remove the old domain. Does anybody know a way to sent out an automatic reply to the sender when people address the message to the old domain?

The option to only keep the old domain for only a few months is not so bad at all. I would preferr this above keeping domains for years.
What you can do is change the internet addresses of the user and create a domain alias for your old domain. And fase out the old domain address…

Why can’t you keep the old domain?
We have obsolete domains here that we have continued to maintain registration and DNS for. Users send all email from new domains and receive most at those same new domains, but if anyone gets back in touch after a long gap, using the old domain, their email will always be accepted.
It isn’t a good idea to let domains that have been used lapse. They are invariably picked up by spammers or people in the Internet medicines bidniss. What might be the impact on your reputation of an old domain being repurposed in this way?

The problem with maintaining the old domain is that only one department out of 3 has been sold. The old domain belongs to the remaining 2 departments. We agreed that we can use the old domain for a few months, but after that period I need to remove the domain. Therefore my question.
