I have designed a form and auto launch an xls - This will open Excel as required with the spreadsheet - but then it will place the window behind the Notes Client - which is illogical for the users - they expect the thing they are opening to be on top - Is there some way of controlling this placement?

This is a well-known issue that’s been talked about quite a bit in this forum.
Depending on which was loaded first, Notes or Office, different things can lose focus. Right now all office autolaunches lose focus for me, but Adobe PDF’s don’t. And from what I’ve experienced, it’s client-specific, so you have to see how it works on other machines.
There are a few work-arounds, but the person opening the document must be able to put the document in edit mode. Not a real-good solution if you like security.
