Authentication failure; ...pasword not found... did not verify

I have some clients who need to access their mails via outlook express but everytime they do, they get this message on outlook; “There was a problem logging in to your mail server. Your password was rejected”.

I checked the server and it says; “POP3 server: Authentication failure for Employee1, connecting host xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx. Password not found in Names and Address Book entry or password did not verify.”

I have checked these clients document entry and made sure that their internet password contains the exact password they’re typing when they log on.

I have tried to reboot the server but the problem is still there.

What could be wrong? Please help.

After so much frustration (tried resolving this problem the whole day) I was able to partially answer my question…

I used the clients’ “User name” in the document entry not the “Short name/UserID” and it worked.

It’s not that I am pushing for this but didn’t R4.5 used to require us the “Short name” instead of the “User name” to log in via a POP3 client?..

I don’t remember the Short Name ever being used for anything except LDAP authentication.

As far as I remenber the CN (Common Name) has always been used. You could be confusing the short name with the names used for all other systems (particular Windows).

Window systems do not allow spaces in the name, but Domino does. This has caused me some confusion from time-to-time.

yeah, this is really confusing at times.i’m just happy the remote users can now connect. thanks for the response.

I know this is an old thread but if someone stumbles across it as I did (maybe looking for how to get Siemens mobile handsets IMAP implementation to authenticate for example) you can use shortname if you set the Internet authentication field in the server document (security tab) to “more name variations with lower security”
