The image should show there in your browser, however you’ll also notice that it has no Alt Text set for it.
Looking at the Attachment properties on the Notes Client, I could not find anywhere to set Alt Text. Is there a way of inserting an image into a RTF and having Alt Text? I tried embedding a picture (ie. Create->Picture) and, although that lets me set Alt Text, embedded pictures with Alt Text look like they’re only for Notes Clients as the picture doesn’t come up in a Web Browser.
I suppose it would be too much to expect the R6/6.5 HTTP render engine/development tools to support W3C WAI guidelines when it makes a gross mockery of the basic HTML 4.01 spec.
Attached Image. In Rich Text Field. With Alt Text. On a web browser. Please.
At what point would you expect the user to see the alt text? When they hover their mouse over the attachment??
Depending on what they’re using, they might see it on a mouse-over (in. IE as opposed to Opera/Firefox 1.5 default settings, for example), they might ‘hear’ it when their screen-reading device is reading it aloud for them, who knows?
Y’know, basically anything for which the Alt Text really should be used for, as advised in the W3C WAI guidelines. That basically means, most accessibility requirements as opposed to just having pretty mouseOver text.
I had a feeling it wouldn’t give Alt Text for an attachment because it’s not necessarily an image. But if Notes is so smart to automatically render image attachments with IMG tags, why not be just as smart and give an Alt Tag property for image attachments?
As is, we are left with the HTTP renderer automatically generating IMG tags with no way of adding its Alt Text (or any other IMG tag property).
Looks like it’s ‘more pass-through HTML’ to get around Notes’ limitations…
UPDATE: It looks like any attachment type in an RTF is rendered in HTML with IMG tags. Even more reason why the exclusion of Alt Text as an attachment property is baffling.
If the default Notes rendering is not sufficient then if you have a RT field that just holds attached images, on my web-facing form/subform, i wouldn’t have that field and I would build a list of attachments using @functions in a Computed for display field using @attachmentNames etc. to build the tag contents with the correct HREF and ALT text.
If the attachments have been added via a web browser file upload control, then adding a field to the web-facing form with $V2Attachments and a value of “1” will hide the attachments at the bottom of the screen.
Thanks for that Melissa, and i’ve already resorted to that. It’s just a shame that i’m reduced to this kind of tom-foolery when all I wanted was an Alt Text property.
