Asterisk in mail rule?

Ok, time for a really dumb question…

I had a mail rule filtering on SPAM in the subject (due to spamassassin tagging it). I was reworking my rules and I deleted it. Now, when I try to create it, it tells me that an asterisk is an invalid character in a rule.

This seems really dumb, AND, I had it working before. I suspect I created the rule under a previous version of notes and now 6.5 won’t let me.

How do I create this rule?

I’m using McAfee’s SpamKiller (based on SpamAssassin) which also defaults the spam tag to SPAM in the subject. I also cannot create a rule looking for the * character and had to tell SpamKiller to tag with something else (we use [SPAM]).

If you have control of the system running SpamAssassin, this is probably the easiest fix.

good luck

I do have access to change the SPAM to something more like SPAM, but, I already have many many users that have setup RULES to look for the asterisk. Some previous version of notes must have allowed it.

Grr… oh well.

You could remove this check from the Rules script library. The comment there claims that an asterisk “would break the final formula”, but it is not obvious to me that anything will break. Perhaps if you try it, you will discover what breaks! If you do not want to change the design, you can make a rule specifying just SPAM. Make a toolbar button that changes SPAM to SPAM in the rule document’s ConditionList and tokConditionList items. Select the rule document and press the button. Edit and OK the rule again to make it rewrite its formula. You can use NotesPeek to check your calendar profile and verify that the formula there is OK.
