we set up automatick archiving, using profile settings… and now it’s archiving ARCHIVES… ? Doesnt it know which files it should archive and which ones already ARE archives???

The archive policies apply to users. From my experience the way they are applied on mail files depends on the mail owner fixed on the calendar profile that will be applied also to the archive files.
The way I choosed to avoid automatic archiving on archive files was having a different directory/folder for archive files than original mail files and then specifiying only the directory/folder of mail to apply archive on compact archive operation.

We have our archives in the Archive folder under data… away from the mail folder.
So where is it that you specified to only archive files in “mail” folder?
