Application Virtualisation

Does anyone have any knowledge or experience in virtualising the Notes Client on a server, please?

A client of mine doesn’t want to continue with the hassle of setting up a laptop for each new franchisee that comes on-board. So they’re thinking that a dedicated server could be virtualised into running say 10 Notes Clients via Terminal Services (is that the same as Remote Desktop?).

Would Microsoft Application Virtualization 4.6, Citrix or VMWare provide a solution?

Your thoughts would be much appreciated.

Thanks. Jerry.

Subject: I don’t see why this wouldn’t work…

  • Bear in mind I’m not an admin, I simply admin my own personal LAN that’s used for development. The Notes/DDE instance I use regularly is running in a VirtualBox VM, and it’s been working perfectly for months and months. I also have a VM with all of my R-prior clients and servers installed … Notes & Domino used to play nicely with multiple versions, but R8.5.x tossed that out on its ear, so my only choice to simultaneously have old and new is virtualization.

  • Other than the fact my primary machine is limited to 4GB RAM (only runs two VMs at once) I have noticed not one problem with moving to a primarily virtual environment.

  • Just be sure whomever sets up this bevy of VMs knows what they are doing, or performance will suffer horribly. Otherwise I’d think this idea would work like a charm.

Hope this helps…
