Apostrophe's in Internet Addresses

I’ve been scouring the RFC’s, as well as this forum, and cannot find a definitive answer.

Is the apostrophe an allowed character in SMTP (Domino)? For example, John_O’Toole@somewhere.com.

I have recently had the same issue with a user in our Domino Directory. He can send and receive email internally, and send externally without a problem, but when someone tries to reply through the internet they get an error (chunk too big) or similar message.Rather than waste time trying to track down whether or not the apostrophe should work, I have implicitly set his internet address in his person document. On the Basics tab, internet address is in the format john_otoole@somewhere.com. This is the address that is received by others through the internet and is used for replies.

Thanks! I hate to eliminate the obvious. That just means that I have to dig deeper…
