Anyone got an explanation: DNS and SMTP mail routing

Hi,I have been having problems routing mail, mainly to messagelabs.com hosted organisations with the error that ‘The Server is not responding. There server may be down…etc’.

Restarting domino often resolved this but not as of late. I fixed it by adding DNSServer=xx.xx.xx.xx, 192.168.1.2 into notes.ini where xx.xx.xx.xx is the DNS server IP address provided by our ISP.

When not explicitly telling domino where to look, how does it know which DNS server to look for and if it’s only been looking at 192.168.1.2 (running Win 2003 server) how has it resolved dns for outgoing smtp mail?

Has anyone had similar problems routing SMTP mail?

The reason I am asking is should my ISP change the IP address of their DNS servers I have to alter it manually and I would rather things work automatically.

Cheers!!

Hi Greg,

That’s very useful background. The reverse lookup thing was also giving me problems a while ago.

Many thanks, it’s very much appreciated!
