Anyone else getting crashes? "Log file full, try again later"

6.5.4 server on 2003 (all updates)…

I’ve been running with circular trans. logs for nearly a year with no problems. Lately we’ve been the target for a deluge of spam/junk mail…

I get a crash “Log file full, try again later”, when the router is trying to process too many messages. What I’m seeing (if I’m not mistaken), is the SMTP listner accepting connections (possibly hundreds, the console scrolls by very fast), the Router trying to route them and my mail rules firing. It seems like thousands of connections, some are being blocked at the protocol level with my SMTP config settings blocking out some known spam sending networks…

My therory thus far is that the hard disk where the trans logs are isn’t able to keep up with the speed at which Domino is processing all these mails. Something get’s out of sync, then wham! No one can connect to the server “Log file full”…

So far the only work around I have was to disable Trans Logging. I really don’t want to run the server like this!!!

Maybe I’m overlooking something simple here (I hope) ?

I think right now I’d like to know:

Is there any settings that would allow me to “throttle” the Router task?

Is there settings to specify the number of incomming SMTP connecitons? and if so, anyway to force them to time out faster?

I’m only seeing this crash when the router has 400+ messages in Mail.box, and at the same time there are more than 10 SMTP connections.

Thanks for any thoughts!

Nothing specific about the router/6.5.4/win2003 comes to my mind, but I have seen Domino server 6.5.4 on win2003 with problems.First of all check SPR# RCE5X7QY5. In 6.5.4 there is a notes.ini setting to implement a fix for win2003.

Second: are you using DNSRBL? These generally block a LOT of connections and you avoid getting the mail at all.

Third: if this is possible, lower the logging of the router.

I am sorry if all these are obvious things you have already tried …

Debug_Skip_UnmapViewOfFile=1 (SPR# RCE5X7QY5)… It was my understanding that upgrading to SP1 for 2003 and upgrading to 6.5.4 solved this issue without the need to add the above notes.ini entry, is that wrong, do I still need that Notes.INI setting even with 6.5.4 on 2003SP1 ?

Yes, I’m using DNSRBLs’ along with local IP and Domain blocks (more information on Chris Linfoot’s site).

I have not yet tried lowing the logging level of the router, I’ve been running on Verbose logging as this helps me track down various issues, but it is something I am willing to try.

Thank you for your thoughts.

Subject: Have your tried using multiple mail.box dbs?

Subject: Not yet…

For now, I updated from 6.5.4 to 6.5.4 FP2, I also disabled hyperthreading…

I still have Translogging turned off…

I’m using 6 RBL’s right now, actually not as many as some other domino shops that I know…

I’m starting to suspect a server hardware problem, but I haven’t been able to track it down yet.

Which RBL’s and how many are you using? My users don’t understand the “don’t sign up for everything you can” concept and we get a tremendous amount of spam as a result (1.2M per year, 200 users – seriously). We had lots of problems with timeouts using the Domino RBL’s and ended up going with an external anti-spam appliance. The difference was tremendous since Domino only has to deal with the things that are legit.
