Any know of a good sales / cost comparison M$ v notes?

I keep reading on the notes site that Notes is the No1. which is pritty good … but does anyone know of a site with a sales and cost comparison of Notes and the M$ option.

Subject: Any know of a good sales / cost comparison M$ v notes?

What Microsoft option? Exchange is a messaging server (an excellent one as far as I can tell), while Notes is an application development platform. It’s comparing apples and pencils. To put it another way: If you need email, buy Exchange; if you need to develop mail-enabled applications, buy Notes.

So if I understand you any company interested only in Mail/calender type functunality should go with Exchange. And only companies involved in product development should be using notes/Domino?

Subject: Not neccessarily

While I know it has been said before, I think it’s important to say it again: Domino is less vulnerable to the average virus out there. Wether this is because Domino is inherently better because of a more solid architecture, or because virus writers target Microsoft more often is a completely different discussion. But there has been no Domino site that I know of that had to stop all email traffic because of a virus infection. There are a lot of Exchange sites where this has happened.

One could say that Domino delivers the same functionality as Exchange, at less cost (according to Radicati that is), with greater security (or less vulnerability). And you get the app dev platform as a bonus.

Subject: I surely wouldn’t agree with that.

It is true that the majority of Lotus customers implement Notes/Domino to do “more than mail”. But there is still a significant minority that use these products just as an enterprise class mail system.

Both Gartner Dataquest and IDC say that Lotus is #1 in this category (Gartner says IBM #1 in messaging with 44%, 8% ahead of the nearest competitor).

Subject: How would you compare Lotus Notes to Outlook?

This question has just been raised at our Company.Thank you for this information you have provided here. Do you have additional or revised comments now that it is September 2006?

Subject: RE: How would you compare Lotus Notes to Outlook?

Well, just off the cuff… look at this: NameBright - Domain Expired

I consulted at a company using Outlook last year and had to wave my Lotus Notes email goodbye for six months. It is not a bad product, but nothing to write home about. I couldn’t wait to get rid of it, but I guess if I had to live with it, I would. But please note that it is an email/calendar/address book application, and that is where it stops. The whole database/application development combo architecture that Notes offer can not be beaten by Outlook.

With regards to user experience I have found that you love what you know and are used to. So, if you have exisitng Outlook users in your company, chances are that they will resist the Notes interface. For them, I suggest you have lots of patience and training showing cool and useful features OR you consider deploying Domino Access for Microsoft Outlook (DAMO), which means they keep the interface but you can have Domino in the backend.

Total cost of ownership is lower for Domino. The End. I don’t even want to debate that - I have just witnessed it at so many clients, especially with regards to hardware requirements and number of administrators. Just make sure you employ one excellent administrator, it makes all the difference.

First you need to determine what the “MS option” is, exactly. The nearest always used to be Exchange, but even MS accept that this is no longer a direct competitor with Notes.

There are various reports on the Lotus website, and no doubt Ed and Alan will chip in with some links too…

Subject: RE: Any know of a good sales / cost comparison M$ v notes?

Given that we are agreed that Notes is ‘better’ then Exchange/Outlook, why is it that there are still so many companies going with IMHO (and I expect yours too) a lesser product?

p.s. sill looking for a few sites (pos one or two not directly related to IBM??)

Subject: RE: Any know of a good sales / cost comparison M$ v notes?

Some reasons:- CIO loves Microsoft

  • users use Outlook Express at home

  • abuse of the OS monopoly

  • better marketing

If Ben’s comment didn’t get Ed and the gang on this post then I think that last remark will!

users use Outlook Express at home

True, true. I think Eudora is a great “at home” email client. Too bad it’s not bundled with Windows, and free.

I found your input very useful!

Subject: domino is more expensive for just mailing

For applications and groupware functions, domino is great and I have developed many marvelous application for it.

One thing that I see though is: customers that only use Notes for mailing are often switching to exchange due to the lower cost.

A thing that I have heard over and over from consultants is, that for just messaging, Notes is too expensive compared to exchange.

I do agree with this sentiment.

Can somebody (maybe also from IBM or Lotus) tell me if I am wrong with this?

Because I am pretty sure that I am right, considering the price tag of Notes and just using it as a mailing system.

Let’s a assume as an example an enterprise with 4000 users.
