Annoying new toolbar behaviour in Beta 2

In beta 2 I’m finding that constant resizing of the toolbar is causing everything below the toolbar to bounce up and down depending on what has the focus. The problem is particularly bad when using symphony. It looks like the symphony toolbar takes up a bit more space vertically than the default size of the toolbar area (maybe this is the root of the problem, that the default size is smaller in beta 2 and too small for symphony) so the toolbar expands downwards a few pixels to make room. However whenever symphony loses the focus the toolbar contracts and everything below jumps upward. This is especially annoying when switching between two symphony tabs because the toolbar contracts only to immediately expand again so that everything bounces on each transition. Annoying and doesn’t create a good impression.

Subject: Toolbar issue…

Hi Martin,

Could you provide a screen-shot of what your toolbar looks like prior to selecting a Symphony tab and then the end result. Would like to see what is causing your toolbars to jump (Widgets enabled or something else). Certainly should not jump between Symphony tabs either. Thanks for posting your issue.

and this is the toolbar with a symphony tab selected.

It seems that any transition into or away from a symphony tab causes a bounce as the sidebar contracts and then expands. Switching away from symphony to the workspace causes a bounce even though the height of the toolbar seems to end up unchanged. I am seeing this behaviour on two machines, one XP and one vista. Both use large fonts, so that may be a factor, but neither showed this behaviour in Beta 1. If I use a plugin to contribute a larger than average icon permanently to the toolbar then the problem goes away.

Subject: Ok, I see what you are describing…

I see the bottom frame of the toolbar adjust up and down when switching between Symphony tabs and also when switching from a Notes view or java view to a Symphony tab. I do not see this when switching between a Notes view or java view to a Notes view or java view. Thanks for reporting this issue, the toolbar team will investigate it further now.
