Ambiguous Names

I’ve looked through the threads on Ambiguous Names and I did not see this particular issue.

We have 4 users in the NAB on the server:

Mary Smith

Mary B Smith

Tom Jones

Tom D Jones

I have no names in my personal NAB.

When creating a new memo, I type in “Mary Smith” and hit . I receive, as expected, the ambiguous names dialog box.

When creating a new memo, I type in “Tom Jones” and hit . I do NOT get the dialog box and Tom Jones is put in the address field. This is causing an issue as Tom Jones is getting mail intended for Tom D Jones.

I cannot see anything fundamentally different between these two cases.

Any clues as to what criteria Notes uses to determine if there is ambiguity?

Subject: Look at the full name field

Does the full name field for Tom D Jones also list Tom Jones as a variation? It doesn’t sound like it does, and it does sound like Mary B Smith has Mary Smith listed.
