We had to move a Domino 8.5 server after problems with the physical server. We moved the data over the top of an existing installation of domino and renamed the new server to be the same as the old one.
The server starts fine and notes clients connect.
The major problem is that any mail that is routed goes straight to the held mail queue. When released it goes straight back into the queue. There are no error messages and no idea why it is doing this. This is the same for mail going internally, outgoing and incoming.
Has anyone ever seen anything like this ? Any ideas on things to try ?
Do a tell router show at the console. This will spit out a list of the domains for which messages are waiting AND WHY they are being held.
I suspect the server you put it on can’t reach other servers, since it is everything being held. Try to ping the other servers and/or internet from that server. (You didn’t say if this was internal or internet.)If you can’t ping the email destinations, then you have a network issue to work out, possibly firewall or something.
Just for reference, if anyone sees this again, we eventually found the problem with help from IBM support. It took many hours.
In the end the problem was that the server we took it too did not have (integrated into domino) virus protection. When domino could not see virus protection it just put things into held without giving any sort of error or indication why.
The fix was to remove a line from the notes.ini that related to the virus protection (Trend Micro)
The main problem was that there was absolutely no error message or indication as to what was going on, if there was something appearing about not being able to virus check we would have fixed it straight away.
Subject: Re: All mail going into held queue after server move
How exactly was this done? “We moved the data over the top of an existing installation of domino and renamed the new server to be the same as the old one.”
Are there any Failure Reason(s) listed for the messages still-sitting in mail.box?
Are there messages listed as Pending without a Failure Reason?
Did you change the new server to have the same hostname and IP address as the previous server? Also, you say you renamed the old server to the new one - could you expand on how you did that?
