AJAX Toolkit for Domino?

Has IBM/Lotus come up with an AJAX Development Toolkit for Domino? The interest is so strong I can’t see IBM/Lotus passing this by!!

Microsoft did not:

OR DO WE HAVE TO BUY OR USE SOMETHING FROM SARISSA, TIBCO, Microsoft (is IBM this close to MS?) OR DOJO!!!

Not looking for something from Websphere or anywhere else… Where is something “specifically” for Domino?

Or as we have all suspected IBM is done with Domino?

Would rather use something “built” for Domino!!! For Domino Developers!!!

Subject: AJAX Toolkit for Domino???

John, could you cut out the inflammatory posts about this. IBM has backed AJAX in all kinds of ways, including contributing to the Dojo toolkit (see link). Microsoft supports Ajax through a .NET toolkit, not through native controls in Word, Excel or Access. Show me the checkmarks you use in those products to add AJAX. You don’t! Using external toolkits is the only way this is supported by either Microsoft or IBM, and by external I mean external to the product, not external to the company. IBM has chosen to promote open source software and has therefore focused on the Dojo toolkit, while Microsoft has focused on proprietary software and has therefore focused on .NET ASP. Does that make Microsoft’s solution any more native to its applications? No! You might as well ask “Has Microsoft given up on Office?”

If you want IBM to add native AJAX controls to Domino, ask for it, make a case for it, lobby for it, but cut out this sort of post which just seeks to agitate unconstructively. You won’t win any battles, and this is a situation where battles aren’t what we need anyway. We need business arguments described eloquently if we want change, and in this case, I have not heard any business case made at all.

Subject: Business case - move forward ?

Ben, thanks for your comments. How do we best work to get IBM to hear this suggestion for native AJAX controls in Domino and also send them a business plan for moving forward. Would love some native controls that gives all the developers the ability to use AJAX right away.

Doing this enables the entire Domino population, not just a few like you, me James and some others on this post. There is a whole population out there that would benefit right away. And of course, if we don’t like what is there we can write our own…

I am doing AJAX now and am successful with it. What I see are developers that may have done some web will struggle and there is to much of this or that product and no native “out of the box” Domino solutions that I feel should be there.

Send me an email if you know how we can get a business case to someone at IBM…

Subject: AJAX Toolkit for Domino???

The difference is Microsoft wants to control every market they are in from top to bottom. IBM realizes where it can add value and chooses to participate in those areas. IBM creating a Domino-specific Javascript web UI framework is of little value considering what else is already available. If you disagree take it up with Lotus, this is a community forum and nobody here can influence that decision.

Subject: AJAX Toolkit for Domino a Great Idea

To use AJAX, we would use HTML and cascading style sheets for the display layer, JavaScript to interact with the document object model on the client side, an XmlHttpRequest object to provide a conduit between the client and server, and XML as the data transfer protocol.

Note: For the XmlHttpRequest, MS Internet Explorer differs slightly from the others.

//////////////////////////////////////////

var page_request = false

if (window.XMLHttpRequest) // if Mozilla, Safari etc

page_request = new XMLHttpRequest()

else if (window.ActiveXObject){ // if IE

try {

  page_request = new ActiveXObject("Msxml2.XMLHTTP")

}

catch (e){

  try{

    page_request = new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP")

  }

  catch (e){}

}

}

else return false

//////////////////////////////////////////

For example, using a simple scenario, consider a Web Page that had a Left Frame containing a list of autos (from a NotesView) and a Right Frame that would display a picture of the car. Without Ajax, when a user clicked on an auto, the Web Page would be rebuilt entirely, to display the auto picture in a NotesDocument the Right Frame.

Using Ajax in Notes/Domino, we could assign the Right Frame an HTML ID. When a user clicked on an auto from the list in the Left Frame, Ajax type Javascript would send an XMLHttpRequest to retrieve the HTML to display the auto picture, and would replace just the Right Frame with the new HTML - thus showing the selected auto’s picture.

document.getElementById(containerid).innerHTML = page_request.responseText

The result with Ajax is that only the Right Frame is rebuilt, not the entire Web Page that non-Ajax code would require.

The savings in this example is small, but in more complicated Web pages (which is the norm), the faster response time for both the Web Client and the Web Server can be significant.

I would greatly appreciate an Ajax toolkit replete with sample real-world Notes Design Elements showing how to most effectively implement these advances using the Notes/Domino environment.

Of course, while I’m asking, I would also greatly appreciate a developer’s copy of WebSphere Portal server, too, to demo the possiblities of Notes via WebSphere!

Subject: AJAX Toolkit for Domino???

The thought is to enable ALL DOMINO DEVELOPERS to use AJAX… Not just a few… Having a specific Domino Toolkit would enable all of them. And, yes, of course, if you have something better on your own do it. But having a Domino Toolkit enables all right away…

While it is not an “IBM Toolkit” here are some things you can look at.
