In OS X 10.2.3, after a period of inactivity, the Notes client hangs on the first attempt to reconnect to the server. This hang lasts a couple of minutes, and finally comes back with a message indicating that the operation didn’t complete in a reasonable about of time. However, when you refresh again, it’s connected (although the auto-complete address feature often doesn’t work).
I noticed that Bryan Newman reported a closely-related issue back in November (“ND6 Client on Mac OSX hanging”), but no one responded. Brian referred to a technote documenting how “a similar bug that can be fixed by adding a preemption_timeout=5 line into the client prefs.” I searched but couldn’t find this.
Subject: After inactivity, R6 client hangs until timeout
We have discovered that network IO in OS X is slightly different than it was in OS 9. The problem that results is that when your server is running UNIX and the server drops the connection to the Mac, for example due to inactivity or as a result of a drop all, and then the Mac client attempts to reconnect we did not properly detect the connection loss causing the Mac client to “hang” until the timeout period expires. A fix has been developed and is planned for the next MR.
As a workaround, the Mac user can use F5 which will break the Mac’s side of the connection and a new network connection will be quickly established.

Jack,
I can’t help you with a fix, but I can confirm that I have seen the same issue since the first Beta of the OSX product. This issue along with the one involving preference file corruption (previously filed) have gone unanswered by the Lotus developers. The only solution I have found is to not leave Notes running. This is a pain, but it is better than the alternative (long timeout). If anyone else has a workaround, I would be very interested in trying it.

I’m not sure I understood well the problem but I have one which seems to me to be the same…on Windows 2000 platform :After Notes connects the ISP to receive/send mail, it hangs* the MS RAS connection (there is no hang up entry in the replicator pane and I have set “Network Dialup idle timeout” at 0 then 30mn without any success)
