I’m working as a freelance Domino consultant and trying to switch over to a Linux platform for my PC. However, there still is no administrator (nor Designer) for Linux.
Any chance for the near future? Don’t want to use XP in a VirtualBox, is no use of switching over, is it? I suppose I’m not the only one here, am I?
It can no longer run multiple instances, so one is forced to squander ludicrous gobs of system resources to have more than one R-any at a time. Since you have to do VM, anyway, just do it for the Admin client as well.
Perhaps you can’t do VM, say due to hardware. That’s not the same as “don’t want to”.
With VirtualBox it’s a no-brainer. You’re liable find out all sorts of things to do with it once you step in. For instance, I have a VM on the VPN and the main machine is not, but with Shared Folders they can still pass files back and forth. Very slick.
Set up the whole thing on windoze first. Once you get it working you can move over to Linux and the same Admin VM will simply continue to function.
I am currently running 3 instances of Lotus Notes 8.5.1. On in a standard configuration and 2 for some customers in Basic (of course).
This still works as it did in previous releases.
What the source codes are concerned, I don’t get the point. There is a Notes client on Linux, no reason not to have an admin, or am I wrong here?
Indeed, I don’t want to switch to a new plaform if I can’t take my tools with me. What’s the point else? Run several VM’s or other to have a set of tools available?
After all, IBM is promoting the open source desktop, no?
I’ll see if there’s anything on Ideajam in the meantime
Subject: Can you load Designer on all three instances?
Ah. You’re only using one standard client. I never use basic clients because I want multiple Designer instances as much as anything else. It’s seriously convenient to be able to launch more than one Designer, particularly when one works with multiple Domino servers at the same time. So for me R8.5+ demands VM and its heinous resource penalty, or it demands that I utterly close everything to switch Designers, wasting gobs of time.
I surmise the Admin & Designer clients don’t share lots of code with the basic client, simply because they are A) separate binaries and B) not ported to other platforms. If it were simple I would very much expect Lotus to have addressed it already, because it’s been a constant gripe for over a decade.
So the recourse is winbloze VM on Linux to get the tools, or stay where you are. At least VM technology has advanced to the point were it is a viable option, so migration to Linux is at least possible in some fashion.
Hi David, indeed, I am an administrator so I can get away with just 1 Designer and 3 Admin clients running ;-). This is one of the reasons why I hope the Admin client won’t become DDE (false hope I suppose). I agree that VM technology is there and rather usable but …
Anyway I presume this strategy of not porting admin & designer to another platform is not a limitation of technology but a … choice? This doesn’t mean it is the right one.
