I have just received a new laptop with Notes 7.0 installed. I have my personal addressbook on my old laptop in Notes 6.5.
When I try to copy this over to my new laptop something goes wrong. I am told to use replace design in a dialogbox but when I do so Notes start up and my addressbook is empty.
Subject: Addressbook export from 6.5 client to 7.0 client
There is more than one way to skin a cat, but I think the easiest (and safest) way to get your address-book info to your new laptop is as follows:
A. On the old (6.5) laptop:
Open Notes and your e-mail database.
Create a new memo and attach the file names.nsf. The location of this file can be found on the Basics Tab in User Preferences (Local database folder field).
Save the e-mail as a draft or simply send it to yourself.
B. On the new (7.0) laptop:
Open Notes and your e-mail database.
Open the memo created above.
Save the attached names.nsf to your the Local database folder (see User Preferences again) as “namesold.nsf”
From the menu bar, select File → Database → Open (Ctrl+O).
There should be two databases named “Olavsen’s Address Book.” Highlight the first, then click Open.
Repeat steps 4 and 5 to open the second instance of “Olavsen’s Address Book.” You now have both address books open side by side.
Go to the old address book (6.5) and highlight all the Contacts (or other documents) you wish to have in your new address book, then select Edit → Copy.
Go to the new address book (7.0) and select Edit → Paste. Your Contacts, etc. will now display in your new address book.
Notes is pretty good about backwards compatibility, but if you have any trouble using the Contacts when addressing memos, you may need to go in and save & close all your Contacts. Hope this helps.
How did you go about copying over the old file? You should be able to just move name.nsf from the old computer, to your new one. You mention it starts up and your address book is blank, that sounds like it is not looking at the one you copied over. Are you sure you put it in the correct directory?
Take a look at this blog entry I wrote a while ago, it will help you with the other files you’ll want to move as well.
My problem is that I have installed the file as a 6.5 client on the old machine. When I copy Names.nsf over to my data directory on the new machine I get an error message when I start the 7.0 client.
The message tells me that there is a problem with the locations and says that I have to run replace design on the names.nsf file after I have started thre client.
When I do this the error with locations is corrected but the names.nsf is then empty when I open it.
