I wonder if there is a way to communicate new feature request to Lotus.
In Notes you can delegate your mail, your calendar and todo BUT not your personal addresses. All our managers want their secretary manage their address book. The only way i’ve found is to create a replica on the server but it’s not user friendly at all.
Why doesn’t Lotus put the addressbook in the mail file too ? and permit to share it !
I don’t understand why isn’t this way from long time … I’m sure many enterprise would like to get that feature.
While not the ultimate solution, I think you could enable roaming profiles for these users.
This might make it a bit easier to setup and manage (versus manually creating server replicas.) The delegatee would still need to be added to the ACL, and they would need to know how to find and bookmark the the database. The delegatee would update the server copy, and replication would take care of updating the owner’s local copy.
I agree that personal contacts and journal documents should reside in one place (your mail database!) and look forward to the day that we don’t have to manage multiple locations for this data. I vote to segregate local client configuration information from personal data once and for all!
Subject: Address Book delegation (new feature requested)
The best avenue for feature requests is your sales rep. A Lotus person might pick it up in this forum, or they might not.
As for the feature - people have been asking for this for years. The main problem has been that the address book is not just an address book. It also serves as the local storage for configuration options; specifically, all your Location documents, connection documents, and other such things. So the debate comes down to, where do you want to store all that info? Your Notes client needs those documents locally, so if you’re mail file is only on the server, it may not be able to reach them.
We’re a step closer in that if you have iNotes (now Domino Web Access) enabled, there is an agent that synchronizes your local address book contact list with the mail file so you can access this information via a browser when connected to the server. I don’t think, though, that it is stored in such a way that you can access it easily via your Notes client.

I don’t see why moving just the personal addresses to the mailfile should be a problem. All other configuration options could stay in a local file (not specially names.nsf but config.nsf or else)
One other missing feature is common adressbook. Many of our departments would like to have common AB where they could share addresses.
I’ll contact our sales rep and i’ll see … (i’ll hope …)

As for moving the addresses in to the mail file - you’re right, it’s not much of an issue, but neither are the hundreds of other feature requests that Lotus receives each year. It’s just a matter of prioritizing.
There’s also the issue of standardization and introducing this new feature. Tens of millions of users use Notes every day, many of them, like me, for over a decade, and we’re used to things being a certain way. If you do something like move the addresses in to the mail file, while it seems perfectly obvious to you (and me, too), there are going to be just as many people for whom this will throw them for a loop. You always have to be careful with functionality shifts like that.
You could take a look at what the data looks like in the mail file after telling it to sync with the local address book, and see if that works. The mail file has a UI to delegate e-mail, calendar and to-do functionality, but not addresses. So, you’d have to come up with a UI yourself. Also, you don’t have to actually be running Domino Web Access and the HTTP stack on your server to get this to work, you just have to use the DWA template on the mail file.
