Add (not register) user to NAB with existing user ID

I have a peculiar situation where there is a user with a valid Notes ID that is not in the Domino directory. What I need is to recertify him because his ID is about to expire. But since he is not in the directory, I can’t do this from the Admin client. Can I easily add him back into the Domino directory without going through the “registration” process (I need to keep his current ID). Thanks.

Subject: You could add the user back into the directory or use a safe copy

The old recertification technique involved the user creating a safe copy of their ID file, sending that to an admin, having the admin perform the operation on the safe copy, then sending the safe copy back to the user who would incorporate those changes back into their ID file. We haven’t been recommending it since R4, since it’s a lot more annoying than just clicking on an entry in the admin client, but it still works.

Subject: but how do I add the user back and still keep the NotesID file?

I don’t understand what you mean by “clicking on an entry in the admin client”. I’m assuming that will create a new user, along with a new NotesID file. What I need to do is to create a new user in the directory, but use the existing NotesID file. Obviously, my admin skills are basic. Please help me understand how it works.

Subject: You’ll need to register him again

If he’s been removed from the NAB you’ll need to re-register him, unless you have an old copy of the NAB you can copy his Person document from. (Yes, that trick does work.)

If you re-register him, but need him to keep his old ID file (to read encrypted mail documents, for example), have him export his public keys and load them into the new Person document. Once you have done that, you can then recertify him to extend his expiration date.

Subject: I would recommend against re-registering users…

… that results in a new ID file with the same name but a different license number and different keys, which can cause problems with pre-existing data and configurations.

Subject: Check out the admin client help for recertification. That should list the steps that you’ll need to take.

Subject: SOLVED

I was able to do it. Selecting Recertify popped up an Error box saying that no entry was found in the directory, but it then allowed me to go ahead and recertify the ID file.
